The Sidney Daniel Genomics Core Laboratory

at the William & Iffath Hoskins Center for Biomedical Research

The Director of this laboratory is Ranjan Perera, Ph.D. who has been recruited from Invitrogen (a major biotech company) and an adjunct appointment at the Burnham Institute (a major basic biomedical research institute) in the San Diego area. Dr. Perera's work is a critical element in developing future tests/screenings for cancer (early prevention) and in the personalization of cancer treatments.

This lab will perform two functions:

•           The Genomics Core represents a service function for laboratory researchers, and consists of advanced technologies, such as DNA sequencing and microarray-based whole genome analyses at both the gene expression (RNA) and germline genetic variation (DNA) levels. These and related technologies currently represent the cornerstone of translational cancer research.

•           The Research and Development component is responsible for translation of research findings from the ACI and other laboratories into clinically useful tests.  When appropriate evidence exists for the translation of a new molecular genetic test from the lab to the clinic, Research and Development will optimize and validate the test, through the State of Georgia, for use in the Clinical Genetics Laboratory.

These labs will greatly facilitate translational cancer research, and bring state-of-the-art molecular cancer medicine to our region.
